The Girnel, Kirkwall

Client: Orkney Sailing Club

Pentarq designed and managed a programme of Exterior Repairs which was carried out by Orkney Builders(Contractors) Ltd during the latter part of 2003. The scope of the work included re-slating (retaining the unique mix of Caithness and Welsh slates), reharling with lime render, repointing the masonry of the front elevation with lime mortar, exterior joinery repairs and other minor works.

The work was undertaken in line with current conservation standards securing, for the future, the building’s historic status. Funding for the project came from a variety of sources as well as the Sailing Club itself – Historic Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund, and Orkney Islands Council.

The Girnel continues to play its part, not only for the Orkney Sailing Club, but also for the historic waterfront of Kirkwall’s harbour area.
